The New York Times calls her “A songwriter with a voice of unblinking tenacity.” \nJess co-founded Three Graces Songwriting Retreat in Asheville\, NC with Abigail Dowd and Jane Kramer\, and has co-led workshops in Nashville\, Chapel Hill and Maryland with Jonathan Byrd\, Wyatt Easterling\, and Korby Lenker. She believes in the transformative power of song and is passionate about helping folks express their own truths through this compelling art form. \nNative New Englander Jenny Reynolds has played the Old Settlers Music Festival\, the Kerrville Folk Festival\, The Philadelphia Folk Festival\, Club Passim\, the Cactus Cafe\, and the Bluebird Cafe\, and has worked with BettySoo\, Warren Hood\, and Grammy winner Ruthie Foster. She was an Official Showcase Artist at SXSW 2008 and 2018.A trained teacher\,  \nReynolds taught private guitar lessons for 16 years\, as well as basic acoustic\, fingerstyle and fingerpicking guitar classes at the National Guitar Workshop and adult classes at the University of Texas. \nUsing exercises that focus on both lyrics and musicianship\, this songwriting workshop will focus on how to keep your creative process moving. How can chord changes influence writing a bridge? How can the structure of the song influence how the story is told? Students can expect group activities and one on one time with instructors. We’ll start at 10\, take a 30 minute break for lunch\, and finish up at 4PM. Students should be writing songs or very curious about starting. Bring your guitars. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with Kirk Smith\n\n\nKirk Smith is a singer\, songwriter\, and playwright from Austin\, Texas. He is best known for writing and performing\, Despair’s Book of Dreams and the Sometimes Radio\, an alternative musical that was produced in multiple cites around the US and won a number of awards. Kirk’s first record\, Suddenly Bright Out\, roared with atmospheric indie rock. His follow-up\, Ithaca\, was more nuanced and mature\, though no less powerful an exploration of alternative rock\, new wave\, and folk music. The single\, This Debt\, stayed in regular rotation on Austin’s KUTX 98.9 for nearly a year. The new album\, IN WAVES is Kirk continuing to explore the common ground between New Wave and Americana. There are hints of Father John Misty alongside Pulp and even Brian Eno. But what ties things together are the songs\, and the voice. It’s not exactly crooning\, but it’s close. Like Leonard Cohen and Morrisey\, Kirk finds a little light in the darkness. He comes across callous at times but also comforting.
